In 1883 Stephen Henderson Herrick of Grinnell, Iowa, first visited California where he experienced a series of unexpected incidents which eventually changed his life, the lives of his family members, and the history of the inland area of Southern California.

The story of Stephen Henderson Herrick and his activities in the Riverside area is, in itself, a journey through the history of the community’s early development.
